A RARE .577 PERCUSSION RESTELL'S PATENT BREECH-LOADING RIFLE, no visible serial number,
built to British Patent 1497 of July 1858, with blued 39in. multi-groove rifled barrel, block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rearsight, the breech-section with extension piece holding a withdrawing bolt opened via a shaped lever laying across the barrel when closed and also operating a rotating locking cam within the body of the bolt, unmarked military style bar-action lock, walnut full-stock, iron furniture including a sideplate of similar form to the lock and three barrel-bands retained with spring-clips and jag-ended iron ramrod, together with a copy of the patent
Provenance: One of the many breech-loading conversions to be designed with hopes of military sales, the Restell's Patent was clever in that it could utilise the standard Enfield barrel simply by removing the breech-plug and adding Restell's apparatus. However, this particular specimen has a deeply grooved seven land barrel of Restell's own design. The bullet and bagged powder-charge were loaded separately, the idea being to gravity feed the bullet into the slightly oversized chamber then adding the powder behind. It was not adopted
