30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, rib engraved 'W. R. PAPE. NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE. WINNER OF THE LONDON GUN TRIALS IN 1858. 1859. & 1866', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, right wall at 19 and some pitting, action incorporating W.R. Pape patent toplever operated barrel bolt, patent no. 1645 of 9th May 1874, carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks with fully engraved carved hammers, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the triggerguard with the Pape trade mark, 14 1/4in. highly-figured stock (cracked and repaired at hand) with steel heel and toe plates, fore-end with Deeley & Edge patent release catch, ornate chequering border and horn finial, weight 5lb. 12oz.

Provenance: The holder of the Pape records has kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed as a 'best quality' by Oswald and sold to Colonel Joicey of Newton Hall in August 1875.
