A MOST UNUSUAL 40-BORE BOLT-ACTION CAPPING-BREECH-LOADING RIFLE, UNSIGNED, no visible serial number,
possibly French, third quarter of the 19th century, with plain 'in the white' round 33 1/4in. barrel, applied boat-shaped fore-sight on a squared platform, no provision for rear-sight, moulded nipple-boss offset right of centre, integral open top receiver, the bolt with spring-loaded folding handle laying flat along the top of wrist when not deployed and lifting to a vertical position allowing the bolt to turn and unlock from its single locking notch, brushed bright bar-action lock with 'French' style hammer and struck with an unidentified tughra within a circular border, walnut full-stock, brass furniture of French style and jag-ended iron ramrod, 48 3/4in. overall, weight approx. 9 1/2lbs
