A .577 SNIDER / ENFIELD BREECH-LOADING THREE BAND MKII** SERVICE RIFLE, serial no. 764,
circa 1857, with 36 1/2in. barrel struck with full Birmingham military proof and inspection stamps, barleycorn front-sight and ladder rear-sight, the hinged breech block stamped 'B.S.A. Co', the lock stamped with the Crown V.R. cypher on the tail and '1857 / ENFIELD' to the centre, brass mounted figured full walnut stock, the right side of the butt with a faint Enfield 1st Class roundel, the left butt with a faint D.C. stamp (Dominion of Canada), complete with sling swivels and square headed rod

Provenance: This rifle was originally made as a Pattern 1853 3rd Model muzzle loading rifle at Enfield in 1857 (the first year of mechanized rifle production) Converted to a Snider breech loader under W. D. contract by B.S.A. in 1867 it was subsequently one of 30,000 urgently shipped to Canada due to fears of an American invasion
