AN EXTREMELY RARE 80-BORE BARREL-RESERVOIR PNEUMATIC AIR CANE, no visible serial number,
by John Lawrence or Johann Gottfried Kolbe (Coleby), London, circa 1735, the 26in. brass-lined smooth-bore barrel of tapering cylindrical form and painted in imitation of malacca (some chips) with detachable brass action signed along the top 'KOLBE, LONDON', moulded walnut curved handle with brass collar unscrewing to reveal the concealed sliding pump, the air reservoir around the barrel, laterally folding iron trigger, large exposed hammer, brass nose ferrule and brass-mounted wooden ramrod stored within the barrel
Provenance: This possibly unique antique air-cane was formerly part of the renowned W. Keith Neal collection before being sold off in New York in 2005. It can be found featured on page 472 of Neal & Back's publication 'Great British Gunmakers 1540-1740' and pictured in plates 217 a-c
