A GOOD AND RARE .73 PERCUSSION ROYAL SAPPERS AND MINERS CARBINE, no visible serial number,
dated for 1841 and ex-Royal Artillery Museum, Woolwich collection, round smoothbore 30in. barrel, block fore-sight, 'U' notch rear-sight, solid top-tang with rounded tail, borderline engraved flat bevel-edged lock of flint form signed with an engraved 'V.R.' crown device over 'TOWER 1841', walnut full-stock with Hanoverian bayonet catch, the right side of butt with painted rack numbers '6' over '55' and also stamped with a '49' below, the same side near heel marked with a small cannon over 'MA' over '915' along with a Board of Ordnance stamp, the Setter Up name 'CUTLER' appears behind the rear-swivel and the name 'W. BAKER' is stamped inside the ramrod channel, brass furniture and iron ramrod and swivels

Provenance: The first Pattern Carbine was approved in 1841 and production commenced in 1842. Initially it was issued with a saw-backed cutlass bayonet but this gave problems and in 1843 it was changed to a socket hilt with plain sword blade. Only 1354 first Patterns were ordered and is seldom encountered in this condition outside of museum collections.
