A CASED 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY JAMES PURDEY, LONDON, serial no. 3982,
for 1845, with 28in. slightly shortened re-browned damascus barrels, bead fore-sight, minimal traces of signature to rib but numbered and maker marked 'J.P.' below the breech, platinum line, engraved iron plugs, scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'PURDEY', engraved slab-sided dolphin headed hammers, figured walnut half-stock (chequering rubbed smooth at wrist), shortened and re-extended by 1in. in antiquity in walnut, iron furniture (engraved detail rubbed) and brass mounted mahogany ramrod, in a period walnut storage case with brass corners and lined and compartmented in green baize, re-applied original 'Purdey' trade-label (holed), together with a period powder-flask and measure and a later shot-flask, oil bottle and sundries
Provenance: This shotgun, along with gun no. 3983, was finished on 30th July 1845 at a cost of £105. The record books state the barrels were 30in.
