AN 80-BORE PERCUSSION SCHUTZENFEST MATCH RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1855, with heavy octagonal 31 1/2in. barrel, muzzle recessed for ball-starter, the top-flat signed 'GUSS STAHL TH. W. WITTHOFF IN FRANKFURT A M', dovetailed bead fore-sight, elevating notch rear-sight, border and scroll engraved breech end with long top-tang, border and scroll engraved 'hump-back' lock with stepped tail signed TH. W. WITTHOFF IN FRANKFURT A M', walnut straight-hand 'roach-belly' half-stock, finely chequered at the wrist with panels of carved scrolls behind, large raised cheek-piece, scroll engraved 'Swiss' style heel-plate (traces of colour), trigger-guard with scrolled pistol-grip tang and finger-spur, the bow engraved with a stag in a woodland setting framed with scrolls, double set-triggers, the finial inlaid in gold with the initials 'P.C.' in gothic lettering, horn fore-end cap and replacement iron ramrod (one thimble (unassociated) detached from under-rib but present, some staining to barrel)
