A FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE 50-BORE PERCUSSION SIX-SHOT REVOLVER, MODEL 'JOHN ADAMS PATENT', serial no. 198,
circa 1866, with 5 7/8in. blued octagonal barrel, the top-flat and top-strap signed 'POTTS & HUNT, 33 LEMAN STREET LONDON', dove-tailed blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight to the rear of top-strap, plain blued cylinder with 'water-wheel' nipple-guard, plain blued two-piece frame stamped with an 'Adams' trademark and signed 'ADAMS'S PATENT IMPROVED No 198', polished spurred hammer, one-piece chequered walnut grip, iron butt-cap with provision for lanyard ring, double-action trigger and blued under-lever rammer, the whole retaining much original blued finish.
Other Notes: Certainly ranking amongst the rarest of English revolvers, this pistol incorporates John Adams British Patent No. 1758 of 12th July 1861 and no. 1959 of 28th July 1866. These patents mainly refer to the cylinder and hammer arrangement which was designed to facilitate easy interchange between pinfire and percussion (represented here). Indeed, A.W.F. Taylerson records in his books on English revolvers that 'specimen arms are not known today' although his later book in conjunction with W.H.J. Chamberlain 'Adams Revolvers' does show an example.
