A FINE CASED PAIR OF 16-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED HOWDAH PISTOLS, serial no's. 3933 & 3934,
for 1845, with 8in. damascus barrels (strong traces of finish), the top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON', colour hardened scroll engraved breech-blocks with platinum lines, borderline and scroll engraved long top-tang, curved and shaped borderline and scroll engraved back-action locks signed 'J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON', sliding safes behind the scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammers, walnut half-stocks with chequered swept butts, silver oval escutcheons engraved with a sleeved hand clutching a cross 'crosslet' above a wreath within a garter inscribed 'VERTUTI FORTUNA COMES', capped swollen pommels, front set triggers, border and scroll engraved blued trigger-guard bows with stylised pineapple finials (much original finish) and captive iron ramrods COMPLETE WITH their original makers mahogany case, compartmented and lined in green baize and containing two lidded compartments and the original loading mallet

Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this pair of pistols were completed 1845 for The Hon. T.P. Peller, and that they were subsequently sold by them at a later date to a Frank Mayne.
