A .750 (REGULATION) FLINTLOCK SINGLE-SHOT SERVICE MUSKET, MODEL '42in. BROWN BESS', gun number 96,
circa 1775 and possibly shortened from 46in., square fore-sight acting as a bayonet lug, banded breech signed 'LONDON' and stamped with private proofs, 'SI' and '10', flared squared top-tang, plain slightly curved and radiused lock sighed 'CLARK' forwards of the hammer, walnut hand-rail full-stock with brass furniture, the heel-plate spur marked '96' beneath 'N.Y.', the comb and serpentine side-plate stamped '10' with the side-cheek stamped 'WP', fore-end swollen at the ramrod throat, iron swivels and iron ramrod, TOGETHER WITH a period socket bayonet (no scabbard), the iron surfaces stained throughout

Provenance: Originally from the Armoury of Hamden House, Buckinghamshire.

Other Notes: the vendor states that this musket was purchased by his grandfather as a present for his father from an antique shop in Tring in 1944 whilst he was away in Italy serving with the Royal Artillery. Apparently because of fuel rationing his grandfather cycled from Bovingdon to Tring to make the purchase, returning all the way with the musket tied to the crossbar.
