A 12-BORE POWELL 1864 PATENT BAR-IN-WOOD LIFT-UP TOPLEVER ROTATING SINGLE BOLT SNAP-ACTION HAMMERGUN, serial no. 6141,
30in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels, rib engraved 'W. RICHARDS. 27. OLDHALL STREET. LIVERPOOL.' and carved with a shell motif at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, William Powell barrel number 6075, incorporating William Powell patent lift-up toplever engraved with a garter inscribed 'POWELL'S PATENT', patent no. 1163 of 7th May 1864, use number 1855, bar-in-wood, carved serpentine fences with Powell patent gold-inlaid 'Loaded' indicators, patent no. 1055 of 1869, rebounding sidelocks with swept hammers of hare's-ear form, fine acanthus scroll engraving with crosshatch bordering, brushed finish overall, 14 1/2in. well-figured stock with engraved steel heel and toe plates, the heel plate engraved with the serial number, Powell provisional patent fore-end release catch, patent no. 2193 of 24th June 1873, weight 6lb. 12oz., in its re-lined leather bound oak case with some accessories

Provenance: The vendor has kindly supplied us with a copy of the entry in the William Powell record books, dated 2th August 1875 where this gun is recorded as being made for Mr W. Richards as:
"one our patent action central fire breech loader with best laminated steel barrels 30in. 12-bore, bored on the new system for close shooting, our pat - strikers & rbdg locks, spring bolt to forend, toe & heel bits (illegible) hardened, no. 6141" at a cost of £18.5, with an additional £1 'extra for choke boring' and 1.6 for the 'box', totalling £19.6.6
