A 12-BORE BOXLOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 6315,
28in. nitro barrels, rib engraved 'WILLIAM EVANS. FROM PURDEY'S. 63 PALL MALL, ST. JAMES'S. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, treble-grip action with removable striker discs, intercepting sears, slender toplever, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, best border and bold acanthus scroll engraving, retaining some original colour-hardening and finish, 14 3/4in. figured stock, weight 6lb. 8oz., in its brass-cornered leather case, the case outer marked 'C.H.T.

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was ordered on the 31st January 1905 for a C. H. Tetley.
The records show the order was for a '12 topsnap hammerless ejector gun by Wm Evans with 28" steel barrels' at a cost of 30gns with a best leather case at a further 2.17.6 and various accessories, the bill coming to a total of £36.18.6

Lt. Col.Charles Harold Tetley D.S.O. (1877-1959), educated at Harrow and Trinity College Cambridge was chairman of Joshua Tetley & Son (Leeds) brewers between 1934 and 1953 and Pro Chancellor of the University of Leeds from 1926-46.
He is well recorded for public service and numerous charitable efforts (not least of all responsible for donations of over £100,000 to Leeds University during his Chancellorship).
During the Great War he served with the 7th Battalion, Prince of Wales' Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) Leeds Rifles as a Major and Lt. Col. and was awarded the 1915 Star for service in France. During his time on the Western Front, he was mentioned three times in dispatches and subsequently awarded the D.S.O. 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of his battalion in an attack, being very successful under most trying conditions and under very heavy artillery and rifle fire'
