AN UNUSUAL FRENCH TRANSITIONAL SMALL-SWORD OR RAPIER,
circa 1670, with tapering double-edged 33 3/4in. narrow blade with central spine and concave edges, one side with inscription possibly 'INTE DORUM SPCAUL UM CO FUND AR MATERNUM' over 'PARIS L'ROY & NILS', a panel of moulded ridges separating the two, further engraved decoration to the blade near forte, cast-iron carved and moulded double shell guard (traces of gilding), symmetrical cast cross-guard with larged floral moulded quillions, flattened bun pommel with carved decoration and traces of gilding, wire basket-weave covered spiral hilt with further variegated wire binding and plaited borders, some corrosion and small losses to guard
