A STYLISED MID VICTORIAN BRASS-HILTED PRESENTATION RAPIER,
circa 1865, with straight double-edged 33 3/4in. narrow plain blade with spatulate tip (some corrosion staining), ornate brass guard comprising of large chased and engraved drooping quillions, the left side doubled, the right with applied pierced outer guard of similar form, pierced 'D' shaped knuckle-bow, solid brasss hilt with en-suite decoration and tea-cosy pommel, the whole hilt and guard with traces of gilding and much dried polish present in the decoration), the reverse of the hilt and guard plain, together with its brass mounted leather scabbard (frog button missing from throat-mount) and an associated shield shaped brass plaque engraved 'THIS SWORD WITH A SHIELD WAS PRESENTED TO MR HENRY WOOD OF THE E.I.B.C.S. BY THE MEN OF COLONEL JAS. SKINNER'S INDEPENDENT HORSE FOR HAVING BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN PROCURING FOR THEIR COMMANDER THE RANK OF LEIUT. COLONEL & C.B. IN HIS MAJESTY'S SERVICE FOR THEIR HIGHLY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE UNDER LORD LAKE & THE MARQUIS OF HASTINGS DURING THE MAHRATTA & PINDARREE WARS, & THE TAKING OF BHURTHORE UNDER THE COMMAND OF LORD COMBERMERE. PRESENTED BY THE ABOVE HENRY WOOD SEP.BER 1867 AS AN HEIR-LOOM TO THE HOUSE OF HIS FOREFATHERS.' (2)
