* W. UHLINGER, USA
A RARE .32 RIMFIRE BRASS-FRAMED REVOLVER, serial no. 591,
circa 1861-62, with 5in. octagonal barrel (cleaned of finish), bead fore-sight, sighting groove to the top-strap, seldom encountered brass frame (loading gate replaced), plain cylinder (also cleaned of finish), sheath trigger, flared walnut grips (repaired at front corners) and sprung ejector rod stored beneath barrel
Provenance: Purchased from the N. Flayderman collection 14-9-93
Other Notes: Whilst Uhlinger .32 revolvers are not particularly rare, only a handful are known with brass frames.
To avoid detection and prosecution by Smith & Wesson under the Rollin White patent, William P. Uhlinger assigned these revolvers various trade names, including, but not limited to 'D.D. Cone, Washington D.C.' (who actually was a patent attorney and had nothing to do with any marketing of Uhlinger arms); W.L. Grant (a possibly fictitious name, but shared with a dry goods merchants in Camden, New Jersey); and J.P. Lower (who became a famous arms dealer in Denver, Colorado, but at the the time of this pistol's production was just a humble store clerk for the Phildelphia arms dealer, J.P. Grubb). In any event, the ruse worked and Uhlinger successfully escaped prosecution.
