P. WEBLEY & SON, BIRMINGHAM
A .577-450 (M/H) SINGLE-SHOT SERVICE-RIFLE, MODEL 'MARTINI-HENRY MKII', serial no. 7495,
circa 1886 and with 33in. barrel signed 'P. WEBLEY & SON, BIRMINGHAM', replacement dove-tailed fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, the breech with stamped South African and ZAR registration marks, Webley winged bullet trademark to top of breech and left hand side of action, serial number to lower rear corner of right hand action side, walnut butt-stock (small chip at head) with sold out of service stamps, iron heel-plate, two iron barrel-bands and under barrel clearing rod
Other Notes: This rifle is most probably one of a quantity supplied by Webley to the Boers in the run up to the Boer war. Webley sold 1500 to the Orange Free State (OVS) and a further 1500 to the Z. A.R. Webley particularly recommended Mk II rifles which he believed more accurate than the Mk III; his reasoning being the fore-end anchor shoe of the Mk III heated and distorted with firing, putting pressure on the fore-end and barrel.
