A CASED EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 28-BORE (.550) NEEDLE-FIRE DOUBLE-RIFLE, MODEL 'NEEDHAM'S PATENT', serial no. 923,
circa 1855, with twist iron browned 29 3/4in. London proved barrels, the top-rib signed at breech 'JOSEPH NEEDHAM & CO, 26 PICCADILLY, LONDON', small ramp and blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight central to four additional ranged folding leaves, border engraved bolt apertures, colour hardened scroll engraved swing-out bolts marked to the rear 'J. NEEDHAM'S No 923 PATENT', engraved 'butter-knife' bolt-handles, blued safes, scroll engraved colour-hardened standing breech and top-tang, figured chequered walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece, blued heel-plate with engraved top-spur, engraved oval iron plate with small keyway (possibly for needle removal) to underside of butt, blued trigger-guard bow, the tang with chequered pistol-grip spur, double triggers, plain silver oval escutcheon forwards of the colour-hardened pineapple finial, single take-down key (small loss to fore-end edge above key), eyelets for a sling, the whole in remarkable original condition and finish and complete with its manufacturer's oak storage case lined and compartmented in blue baize, the inside of lid with 'Needham & Comp'y.' parchment label
