Product Details

TWO VINTAGE CANE BLOW-PIPES WITH BAMBOO DART QUIVERS FROM BORNEO, each approximately 87in. long and with some incised decoration, the quivers with tube compartments internally for numerous quill darts (none present) and with woven reed lids (one lid damaged)

Provenance: The vendor has kindly provided us with the following information:

These 4 items (two pipes and 2 quivers) were originally in the possession of Charles Hellis & Sons and bought back from from the Far East (we understand Borneo) by Mr Hellis Sr.

His son, Captain Charles Hellis presented them in turn to my father Mr. Bill Roper when Hellis & Co. rented out their old cartridge loading workshops in Burwood Mews to Bill when he set up his own workshop, later moving to 32 Connaught Street when the mews was demolished in the late 50's.

The pipes were common among the Senoi tribe from the Ulu Jelai region of Malaysia, Ulu meaning Headwaters, and Jelai, referring to the river Jelai, probably around 1901-1906. and on disposal, contained the original darts which were tipped with an unidentified (and still lethal) derivative of curare.
