A CASED 18-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, serial no. 5852,
circa 1813 and converted to caplock from flint by the makers, with 30 1/2in. twist barrels, sunken top-rib, bead fore-sight, gold poincons to the breech-blocks embossed 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT' together with a crown, screwed plugs at breech, engraved top-tang (detail rubbed), recoloured border engraved locks with scrolled feathered serpents engraved to front of bar and tail and signed 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT', engraved slab-sided hammers of Manton style with detachable noses, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture (cleaned, engraved detail lost) and replacement ramrod, together with a competently reproduced oak storage case lined in dark green baize, reproduction parchment label inside lid and containing period shot and powder flasks, a cap-tin, two turn-screws and a later three-piece rod

Provenance: Neal & Backs volume, The Manton Supplement, lists gun no. 5852 as a 'Double barrel 20-bore shotgun of flintlock, converted to caplock and marked 'Joseph Manton, London. The barrels are listed as unmarked and 30in., made by 'CL' (actually marked 'CS') and with London proof
