circa 1845, with octagonal 4in. barrel, the top-flat signed 'ROSS, EDINBURGH', engraved band to face of muzzle, scroll engraving to breech-end, bead fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight, fenced snail, borderline and scroll engraved boxlock action with radiused corners, engraved dolphin-headed hammers, finely chequered walnut grip with shallow domed engraved butt-cap, central trapdoor for caps, guarded trigger and captive iron ramrod below barrel, traces of finish below surface corrosion
