late Edo period with 20 1/2in. signed blade, visible hamon of near 'crashing wave' style, white metal habaki, plain oval tsuba, almost certainly of shibuichi alloy, cotton-bound ray-skin hilt and black lacquered saya with pocket for kozuka (present) and gold fleck decoration, with further alloy mounts matching the tsuba
