with 21 1/2in. barrel rifled with six grooves and stamped 'SHARPS RIFLE MANUFACTURING CO. HARTFORD', brass blade front-sight and fixed vee rear-sight (period replacement), back-action lock marked to centre 'C. SHARPS / PATENT 1852', Sharps patent pellet primer, action tang stamped 'C SHARPS / PATENT 1848', two piece brass mounted walnut stock, the butt with patchbox, half fore-end with one brass band
Provenance: This pattern of Sharps is known to collectors as the 'John Brown Sharps' for its association with the abolitionist leader in the mid-1850's. They were manufactured between 1854 and 1857 with an estimated production of 10,500, this is an early example
