AN EXTREMELY RARE .577 SNIDER TRIALS TYPE BREECH-LOADING VOLUNTEER NAVAL RIFLE BY BLISSETT, serial no 573,
circa 1866, with 30 1/2in. Birmingham proofed barrel rifled with five grooves, the barrel and breech unit made as one piece, fitted with a P60 pattern bayonet lug at the muzzle, barleycorn front-sight and ladder rear-sight graduated to 1100 yards, the hinged breech block stamped with acknowledgements to Sniders Patent, the lock bearing the Crown 'TOWER' cypher on the tail and 'BLISSETT / LIVERPOOL' to the centre, regulation brass mounted full walnut stock, two iron barrel bands the rear band of Baddeley pattern, complete with sling swivels, rod a replacement
Provenance: This rare and interesting rifle although a new made arm and not a conversion is made to the early trials patterns with a one piece barrel and breech, the rear end of the barrel being machined open to form the loading chamber and manufactured with lugs to secure the hinged breech block via a pin. Standard Snider rifles were produced with a separate breech unit that screwed onto the barrel. This rifle also has a different type of spring loaded firing pin, it being secured in place by a lock screw and not a nipple as per the standard Snider
