for 1873, 28in. black powder only bold damascus barrels with matted rib, two folding leaf sights marked for 100 and 150 yards, bead fore-sight, the tubes engraved 'CHARLES LANCASTER. 151. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. PATENT SMOOTH BORE BREECH LOADING RIFLE', thumbhole underlever of Purdey 1863 (second pattern) style, carved fences, striker discs, non-rebounding back-action locks with high-spurred bolted hammers of hare's-ear style, the breasts of the hammers striking the firing pins, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the action bar with 'CHARLES LANCASTER'S PATENT', the lockplates with scrolling banners engraved 'C. LANCASTER. LONDON. PATENT.', chequered triggerguard tang, 14 3/8in. figured stock with cheekpiece and chequered steel buttplate with back strap, stock cracked at toe, weight 9lb. 6oz.
