circa 1870, with 19 1/4in. Enfield Ordnance proofed barrel stamped 'STEEL', rifled with 5 grooves, replaced front-sight, and short carbine style ladder rear-sight, the lock stamped with the Crown V.R. cypher on the tail and '1870 / ENFIELD', to the centre, regulation brass mounted walnut half stock, the butt-cap with trap containing its original two piece cleaning rods, the butt-cap tang marked 'R 4 / A / 65' indicating issue to the 4th regiment of Cavalry, A Troop
Provenance: The British War Department supplied 2000 Snider / Enfield Mk 3 cavalry carbines to Portugal in 1871
