A GOOD CASED .450 BLACK POWDER EXPRESS FALLING-BLOCK RIFLE BY ALEX'R HENRY, serial no. 4790,
for 1882 and with patent use number 1706, with reblued 28in. barrel, the top marked 'ALEX'R HENRY, EDINBURGH AND LONDON', block and blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with additional folding leaf, border engraved colour hardened action (strong traces of finish remaining) with an oval panel to the bridge bearing the patent use number, polished breech-block, colour hardened and dipped border engraved back-action lock with traces of colour and signed 'ALEX'R HENRY', sliding safe mounted forwards of the hammer, border-engraved top-tang, chequered walnut pistol-grip butt-stock with chequered iron heel-plate and moulded horn grip-cap, under-lever mounted below the trigger guard and chequered walnut fore-end with moulded tip, in its full-length leather covered maker's case probably relined and compartmented with burgundy baize, original Henry parchment trade label inside lid (lid lining loose at right end) and complete with a full compliment of numbered loading tools, the outside of lid embossed with J.E. MACNAIR, CALCUTTA'.

Provenance: The reference work 'Alexander Henry - Rifle Maker' by Donald Dallas, lists this rifle as being completed on the 12th January 1882 as a second quality rifle. The same work states there were four qualities; Best, Second, Third and Fourth, in that order, with the last also being sometimes referred to as 'Plain'
