A SCARCE GIFFARD PATENT 8mm CO2-POWERED AIR-RIFLE SIGNED MAN'F. FRANCAISE D'ARMES ET CYCLES, ST ETIENNE, serial no. 6122,
circa 1880, with 25 1/4in. barrel with original gilt signature deliberately erased apart from 'ST ETIENNE' and later stamped to the side 'MANUFACTURE FRANCAISE' and 'D'ARMES ET CYCLES, ST ETIENNE', dove-tailed beaded blade fore-sight, adjustable tangent rear-sight, scroll engraved breech-section with round aperture rotating loading tap, the top front stamped with a balloon motif, exposed hammer, under-barrel reservoir with three milled bands and bearing the serial number '43424', walnut chequered butt-stock with hard-rubber heel-plate moulded with a balloon above the words 'PAUL GIFFARD INVENTEUR', the top of heel stamped in the wood '2860', retaining the majority of its original finish to metalwork
Provenance: The manufacturer of these rifles changed several times during its production probably accounting for the manufacturer's details being erased and new details being re-applied
