A RARE .177 M.G.R ANSONIA TYPE AIR-RIFLE, no visible serial number,

Product Details

A RARE .177 M.G.R 'ANSONIA' TYPE AIR-RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1905, with octagonal 19in. smoothbore barrel, the top-flat engraved 'THE ANSONIA' (probably not period), dove-tailed fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with additional folding leaf, the breech-block stamped on the left face 'M.G.R' within a target circle quartered by crossed batons, plain cast and machined air-chamber with barrel locking lever mounted to left underside behind the breech, slab-sided trigger unit with rounded top and base, the trigger guard flush fitting to the casting of the air-chamber, figured walnut straight hand stock without cheek-piece, iron heel-plate and no provision for fore-end

Provenance: This rifle is a bit of an enigma. It may well be a type 1 M.G.R. that someone has erroneously engraved with 'The Ansonia', or it may be the proof that M.G.R. did indeed actually manufacture the Ansonia, as the barrel is of the correct two-piece construction for that model and not solid like the M.G.R variant should be. But then the barrel is smoothbore, the Ansonia should be rifled...
