A RARE SWEDISH 10.15X61R NORWEGIAN CONTRACT JARMANN M1884 BOLT-ACTION RIFLE, serial no. 290,
early example dated for 1883, Carl Gustav makers mark on barrel and receiver, the receiver also marked 'J.P.' and 'J.G' either side of the mark with rotating magazine cut-off below, blued octagonal to round 32 1/4in. barrel, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, windage adjustable ladder rear-sight, large polished straight bolt-handle to rear of action, pale Scandinavian beech full-stock with shallow broad finger grooves to fore-end (cracked and repaired lengthways forwards of trigger guard) with two colour hardened iron barrel-bands and brass-tipped under-barrel clearing rod, much apparent original finish to the metalwork, woodwork refinished
Provenance: Designed by the Norwegian Jacob Smith Jarmann in 1878, approximately 30,000 Jarmann M1884 rifles were set up for Norway by their neighbour, Sweden, between the years 1884 until the adoption of the Krag Jorgensen in 1894. Despite amazing accuracy and dragging Norway into the modern age of bolt-action rifles, the Jarmann was not a great success as the combination of pointed bullets and a tubular magazine lead to a number of accidents. Many of the rifles suffered the ignominious fate of being converted to harpoon guns after they were withdrawn from service, meaning that the Jarmann is a rare survivor today
