A FINE CASED PAIR OF 36-BORE PERCUSSION DUELLING PISTOLS BY T. J. MORTIMER , serial numbered 4120,
circa 1819 with later conversion by drum and nipple, probably by the makers circa 1835, with 10in. laminated octagonal smoothbore barrels, the top-flats signed in flowing script 'T.J. MORTIMER, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, LONDON', the 'K' in 'maker' bisecting the 'E' and 'R' in 'Mortimer, dove-tailed fore-sight, shallow standing notch rear-sights, engraved breech blocks with two engraved bands and a further engraved platinum band, vented platinum plug to the drums, fully engraved top-tangs, flat slightly curved locks with engraved bevel edges and dipped tails, signed below the original pan cut-outs 'T.J. MORTIMER, ST JAMES ST', acanthus scroll engraving and scroll engraved hammers, walnut half-stock with chequered bag-shaped grips, oval escutcheons to wrists, blued spurred trigger guards, plain triggers, turned thimbles and brass mounted mahogany ramrods, much finish remaining from the period of conversion and together with their original fitted mahogany case, Thomas Mortimer parchment label and lined and compartmented in dark green velvet, complete with a good three-way flask, loading rod, ball mould, oiler, Mortimer cap tin and later period nipple-key and turnscrew
