Product Details

A CASED PAIR OF 54-BORE PERCUSSION TURN-OFF BOXLOCK POCKET PISTOLS SIGNED LAKE, BRAINTREE, no visible serial numbers,
circa 1845, with 1 5/8in. round blued turn-off barrels, squared boxlock central hammer actions with concealed automatic triggers and engraved with stands of flags, with oval panels on the left signed 'LAKE' and 'BRAINTREE' in similar panels to the right, slab-sided walnut butts and sliding safeties to the top-tangs, together with a mahogany brass cornered storage case lined and compartmented on green velvet (faded brown) and containing a powder flask, scissors mould, caps, balls and key for the lock, the outside of lid with escutcheon engraved 'BENDYSHE WALTON, HAVERHILL, 1847', the inside of lid with parchment trade label for Witton & Daw, London

Provenance: The name on the lid escutcheon would appear to be that of Lt. General Bendyshe Walton (1827 - 1896) C.I.E. who served in India with the 53rd (The Shropshire) Regiment Of Foot. He served alongside Lt. Col. Gordon of the 93rd Regt. during the Indian Mutiny, and was wounded in Lucknow in November 1857. The Walton family lived at Vale Place, Haverhill from around 1820
