A 22-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE, BY WILLIAM GREENER, serial no. 10238,
of grade 4 or 5 quality circa 1868, with 27in. rebrowned damascus barrels, the flat top-rib signed 'WILLIAM GREENER, RIFLE HILL WORKS, BIRMINGHAM' and forwards of the rear-sight 'ARTHUR BRINKMAN', both inscriptions within borderline panels (rubbed), scroll engraving around the rear-sight dove-tail and to rib-end at breech, engraved platinum plugs, borderline engraved colour hardened top-tang with scroll engraved detail, border engraved colour hardened bar-action locks with moulded hammer mounts and further scroll engraved detail, moulded, sculpted and engraved hammers, figured and chequered walnut half-stock, iron furniture including complex finial and heavy duty brass-mounted ebony ramrod, rear eyelet for sling absent and together with a facsimile copy of Brinkmans book, 'The Rifle In Cashmere:- A Narrative of Shooting Expeditions in Ladak, Cashmere, Punjaub Etc. With Advice on Travelling, Shooting And Stalking' (1862) and a letter from the firm of W.W. Greener explaining, amongst other information, the grading system for their rifles of the time
Provenance: From the accompanying volume, it would appear that Brinkman extensively travelled India, hunting many types of game. On page 187 of said same volume he thoroughly recommends the rifles of Greener, going as far as to say 'one should pay at least 25 Guineas' and mentioning that even though a 5 Guinea gun may work as well, they are not as robust and will soon give out
