A SCARCE .300 (ROOK) SINGLE-BARRELLED SIDELEVER SIDELOCK EJECTOR HAMMERLESS ROOK & RABBIT RIFLE BY HENRY ATKIN, serial no. 486,
circa 1891, 28in. black powder only ovate barrel by Adams & Tait, finely wave cut top flat with open sights and single folding leaf sight, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 50 and 80 yards, bead fore-sight, the breech end mounted with a telescopic sight in quickly-detachable mounts, the mounts over a banner engraved 'HENRY ATKIN (FR.........JERMYN ST. HAYMARKET. LONDON.', the left side engraved '300 BORE', arcaded fence, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, non-selective ejector, fine acanthus scroll engraving, retaining some original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/4in. figured pistolgrip stock with engraved domed steel pistolgrip-cap and chequered horn buttplate, Hackett snap fore-end with horn finial (minor loss to rear left edge), weight 6lb. 11oz. (with scope) and 5lb. 15oz. (unscoped), in its lightweight leather case (with provision for scope), the lid outer marked '300 BORE ROOK RIFLE.' and with a canvas and leather outer cover.



Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was made as a .300 (rook), for a J.B. Hankey.

Research would indicate J.B. Hankey to be John Barnard Hankey, born in 1845 at Fetcham Park, Surrey. He inherited this estate in 1872. He was a keen sportsman and was Master Of The Surrey Fox Hounds 1876-1882. He was keen on polo, racing and hosted many shooting parties at Fetcham Park. He died in 1914
