A 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 5167,
for 1856 and a later conversion to centre-fire from muzzle loading, 28 3/8in. black powder only bold damascus barrels (post 1887 marks, some dents), the rib engraved 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, true cyl. both, slender toplever, carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks with grip safety, lockplates signed 'J. PURDEY' (possibly later at conversion), large bowed triggerguard, retaining traces of colour-hardening and finish, 14 5/8in. well-figured stock with scroll-engraved steel buttplate, fore-end with Anson push rod release, weight 7lb. 6oz., in its mahogany case with circular brass escutcheon and flush-fitting carry handle
