"The Mauser belonged to my Grandfather Rev Arthur Leonard Helps M.A. Cantab. Vicar of Puddletown and Rural Dean and Surrogate, Dorset. Acting Chaplain in "South African War" and "Great War" - 3 medals and Mons Star, mentioned in dispatches for gallantry in the field.
Family say that the Mauser came from "The South African War" when Grandfather captured the owner who had a pair of rifles, but Grandfather as Chaplain had to hand the other one over to his CO.

A.L. Helps was a true sporting vicar who shot extremely well, rode to hounds and played tennis to Wimbledon standards"
