A GOOD CASED 20-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY JOSEPH MANTON, serial no. 10075,
for 1827, with unusual 32in. stepped two-stage twist barrels reducing in diameter 10in. from the breech, the broad shallow concave top-rib signed 'JOSEPH MANTON & SON PATENT, 6 HOLLES STREET CAVENDISH SQUARE, LONDON' between treble brackets, bead fore-sight, engraved rib-end at breech with vented platinum plugs, fully engraved top-tang with traces of colour, border and scroll engraved colour hardened locks signed on the top edge of the bars 'JOSEPH MANTON & SON PATENTEES' (hammers with expert repairs), figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, engraved iron furniture, clipped corner escutcheon behind top-tang engraved 'C.A.', brass-mounted mahogany ramrod, complete with its makers mahogany case with brass corners and bow-tie escutcheons, possibly relined in antiquity with green baize but retaining the original parchment trade label (for Berkeley Square), together with some period and reproduction accessories

Provenance: This unusual barrelled shotgun is noted in Neal & Back's book 'The Manton Supplement' and the authors note that everything about its design point to a gun made circa 1836, bar the serial number. The later Holles Street address would seem to indicate that the gun remained on hand, possibly unfinished, for some period of time
