A FINE CASED .450 (3 1/4IN. BLACK POWDER EXPRESS) FALLING-BLOCK SPORTING HAMMER RIFLE SIGNED ALEXANDER HENRY, EDINBURGH, serial no. 2002,
for 1869, with 28 1/4in. blued barrel signed 'ALEXR. HENRY. 12, SOUTH ST. ANDREW ST. EDINBURGH. PATENT NOS. 1333 AND 275', block-mounted bead fore-sight, block-mounted rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves each with platinum centre-line, colour-hardened scroll engraved action marked 'PATENT NO. 275', colour-hardened scroll engraved back-action bolted lock mounted on the left side and signed 'ALEXR. HENRY', figured pistolgrip stock with chequered grip and fore-end, scroll engraved chequered iron butt-plate, dark horn pistolgrip-cap, the whole retaining much original finish and colour, in its maker's original brass-cornered oak case with new leather covering, lined with green baize (faded) with a near full suite of accessories including serial numbered bullet mould, the lid with Alexr. Henry trade label and handwritten loading instructions

Provenance: This rifle is listed in Henry's ledger as being: Best single D/L 450 Gauge. 28in. barrel. Left Lock. Action patent no. 1333/275. Stand and leaf sights to 250yds. 4 Drams hollow bullet and wad. Made for Major A. Short. 1869.
