A 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 16514,
for 1899, 29 3/8in. replacement nitro chopperlump barrels (by the makers in 1975), the rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON, ENGLAND' and '1' at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, fences carved in high relief with ornate stylised acanthus scrollwork on a finely stippled background, removable striker discs, toplever engraved '1', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, arrow cocking-indicators, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, brushed bright finish overall, 14 1/4in. stock with wooden insert section at cheek (replacing removed cheekpad), weight 6lb. 11oz., in a brass-cornered leather case

Charles Sugden (b.1859) was a well-known actor playing in all the major theatres in London and elsewhere. In Who's Who he listed his recreations as; passionate about shooting, racehorses, birds egg collecting and sprint running.
