AN EARLY 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY ALEXANDER HENRY, serial no. 165,
circa 1855, with heavy gauge bold damascus 30in. barrels, the broad concave top-rib signed in gothic script 'ALEX'R HENRY 12 SOUTH ST ANDREW ST, EDINBURGH', London proofs, a hunting dog's head engraved to rib end at breech, platinum vents, moulded fences, fully scroll engraved top-tang, border scroll and gamescene engraved bar-action locks signed in similar script 'ALEX'R HENRY' forwards of the 'C' shaped scroll engraved dolphin headed hammers, highly figured chequered walnut half-stock, initialled gold shield-shaped escutcheon to back of wrist (rubbed), iron furniture (some pitting and wear), cross-bolt fore-end with oval-headed flush-fitting key and brass mounted ebony ramrod

Provenance: According to Donald Dallas's reference work 'Alexander Henry, Rifle Maker', exact dates of serial numbers were not kept by Henry until 1871. The purchaser of gun number 165 is not recorded but it is listed as a best double, as indeed is gun number 166 and may well have been supplied as a pair
