A RARE .577 PERCUSSION SWINBURN BREECH-LOADING CARBINE OF BAILEY'S PATENT, patent no. 907,
dated for 1862 and in the style of the British Military Pattern 1861 Cavalry Carbine, with 21 1/2in. iron barrel (finely pitted externally), traces of a stamped inscription 'BAILEY'S PATENT BREECH LOADING CAVALRY * CARBINE' (remainder obscured), shallow block and blade fore-sight, rear-sight of one standing notch and two folding leaves, commercial Birmingham proofs, shaped housing projecting to rear with a lift-up and pull sliding bolt, the top marked 'BAILEY'S PATENT No.907', borderline engraved colour hardened bar-action lock signed 'SWINBURN & SON, PATENT, 1862', walnut full-stock with iron furniture including saddle bar with loose ring to the left side of action and a pan-headed captive iron ramrod, much finish remaining except where noted
Provenance: Very few Bailey patent carbines are known to remain in existence. Thomas Bailey was an American inventor and was granted British Patent 907 on April 13th, 1861. This may well be a prototype. Bailey had two other British Patents granted, one, No. 2625 in 1857 for a lock design (in conjunction with J.F. Swinburn), the other, No. 1634 in July 1868 for a breech loading chamber revolver. Neither appear to have been particularly successful
