A GEORGIAN SILVER CHEST USED AS A CAMPAIGN CHEST BY FATHER AND SON, FIELD MARSHALL SIR HEW DALRYMPLE ROSS AND GENERAL SIR JOHN ROSS, PENINSULAR WAR, WATERLOO, INDIAN MUTINY AND CRIMEA CONNECTIONS,
circa 1780s, shallow domed lid with riveted iron strapping, and cast iron handles, brass plaque engraved 'Col. J. Ross / Rifle Brigade' near lock (Sir John Ross was promoted Colonel in 1865), one end is painted 'Major H. D. Ross / LONDON', (Sir Hew Ross was promoted Major in 1811), lid interior with chalked name and date '1872', the chest has been forced with the hasp broken, measuring approx. 27in. wide, 17 1/2in. wide, 20in. high

Provenance: Field Marshall Sir Hew Dalrymple Ross, GCB (5 July 1779 - 10 December 1868) commissioned Second Lieutenant Royal Artillery in 1795, promoted Lieutenant 1796, saw active service in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Promoted Captain 1806 and given command of a troop of the Royal Horse Artillery. Saw active service during the Peninsular War, taking part in the battles of Coa, Bussaco, Pombai, Redinha, Casal Novo, Sabugal, and Fuentes de Ofioro. Promoted Major 1811, was at the sieges of Cuidad Rodrigo and Badajoz, and battles of Salamanca and Vitoria, following which he was rewarded with promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in 1813. Took part in the battles of the Pyrenees, Bidassoa, Nivelle and Nive, the latter in which he had his horse shot from under him. Fought at Bayonne and appointed KCB in 1815. Later that year fought at Waterloo and the subsequent pursuit of the French. Promoted Colonel 1830, Deputy Adjutant General of the Royal Artillery in 1840, Major General 1841 and Lieutenant General in 1851. Became Lieutenant General of the Ordnance in 1854 responsible for checking guns sent to the Crimea and full General and advanced to GCB later the same year. Retired 1858, serving as Master Gunner, St James's Park in 1864 promoted Field Marshal 1868 and became lieutenant-governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.


General Sir John Ross, CGB, DL. (18 March 1829 - 5 January 1905), commissioned as Second Lieutenant into the Rifle Brigade in 1846, saw active service in the Crimean War, fighting at the battles of Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol. Promoted Major in 1856, sent to India, was at Cawnpore and Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny and in 1863-64 he took part in the North West Frontier Campaign with the Rifle Brigade and fought at Shubkuddar. Promoted Colonel in 1865, Brigadier-General in the Bengal Army in 1874 and commanded the Perak Expedition of 1875-76 in the Malay Peninsular. Promoted Major-General in 1877, served Malta 1878 and with the Second Division Calne Field Force 1878-78. Knighted in 1881. Commanded the Poona Division of the Bombay Army 1881-86, was Commanding General of British Forces in Canada 1888-93. Promoted full General 1891, retired 1896 becoming the Rifle Brigade's honorary Colonel until his death.
