"J. PURDEY" 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, no visible serial number, circa 1870, 30 1/2in. black powder only Birmingham-proved damascus barrels (some pits and dents), the rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, carved percussion fences, unsigned bar-action locks with rebounding hammers, border and partial acanthus scroll engraving, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/4in. stock including buttplate, Hackett-type snap-on fore-end, weight 8lb. 11oz.
