Product Details

A ZULU ISIHLANGU WAR-SHIELD TOGETHER WITH A IKLWA STABBING SPEAR, the cow-hide shield is worn and in the style of the late 19th-early 20th Century (being smaller than those generally associated with the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879), measuring 21 in. x 41 in., with a stab hole lower left showing where the animal was slaughtered, is worn and almost completely devoid of fur, with only two leather loops each side of the handle and the stick is an obvious modern replacement; the 48 in. spear appears to be from the AZW, as although the blade seems to have been darkened, there are tong marks at the base of the blade, which is tang-mounted with cow-tail binding and a flared terminal with a knife-cut end; best guess is that this is an early tourist piece but it may be earlier or date up to the 1960s
