A SCARCE 12-BORE 1865 PATENT SIDELEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 1511,
for 1866, 30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, broad rib engraved 'ALEXR. HENRY 12 SOUTH ST. ANDREW ST. EDINBURGH. PATENT NO. 80', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, Henry patent action, patent no. 1071 of 17th April 1865, incorporating the internal self extracting strikers, single spring powered bolt and extractor mechanism aspects (not including the twin sidelever safety mechanism or the loaded indicators), carved percussion fences, non-rebounding sculpted back-action locks with ornately carved short nose hammers, scalloped action body, non-standard horizontally mounted sidelever (rather than vertical), best border and bold acanthus scroll engraving, 14 1/4in. figured stock including steel heel and toe plates, chequering refreshed overall (possible repairs to fore-end wood), weight 6lb. 12oz.

Provenance: We are kindly informed that the gun was completed in 1866 for a Mr C. Church Esq. as a 'Best Dble. C.F. gun, 12 Gauge, 30 Inch Barrels, Patent No. 80. Outside Pistons, Lever behind the Lock'

Literature: According to Donald Dallas in his definitive history of Alex Henry 'Alexander Henry - Rifle Maker', "very few guns or rifles were built on this 1865 patent - although around 300 have patent use numbers to the patent, the vast majority of them were conventional and only retained aspects of the patent, such as the self-extracting strikers"
