A 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 3386,
for 1840, with slightly shortened 29 3/4in. browned damascus barrels, the top-rib signed 'J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON' (lightly rubbed), platinum and engraved bands at breech, engraved rib-end, platinum plugs, fully borderline and scroll engraved top-tang, border, scroll and gamescene engraved bar-action re-coloured locks signed 'PURDEY' (refreshed), bolted safes forwards of the engraved hammers, figured chequered walnut half-stock with iron furniture and brass tipped ebony ramrod

Provenance: According to L. Patrick Unsworth's publication 'The Early Purdeys', this shotgun was completed on December 11th 1839 as a 14-bore with 31in. barrels. No further information is given
