A SCARCE LIGHTWEIGHT 14-BORE SINGLE-TRIGGER EASY-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 8650, with extra 12-bore barrels,
for 1938, original 28in. 14-bore nitro chopperlump barrels, rib engraved 'BOSS & CO., 41 ALBEMARLE STREET. PICCADILLY. LONDON. W.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/2 and 3/4 choke;
extra 27in. 12-bore nitro chopperlump barrels (in 1975), rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 13/14. CORK STREET. LONDON. W.1.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/2 choke, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, Boss improved patent single trigger, rolled-edge triggerguard, triggerplate engraved 'BOSS'S PATENT 22894', best fine border and acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, retaining some original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/2in. figured stock, weight 6lb. (14-bore) 6lb. 4oz. (12-bore), in its makers brass-cornered oak and leather double guncase
Provenance: It is recorded in 'Boss & Co. Best Gunmakers' by noted gun Historian, Donald Dallas, that only around 27 14-bore shotguns were made by Boss.
The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was ordered on 28th April, 1938 for Mr D'Arcy Horn of Hill House, Whitburn, Co. Durham. It was 'sent home' on the 8th August that same year.
D'Arcy Horn (1882 - 1954) was recorded as being a director of Ayres Quay Glass Works, Sunderland.
