A SCARCE .69 FLINTLOCK SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1816 TYPE III MUSKET, no visible serial number,
dated for 1838, with lightly cleaned 42in. smoothbore barrel, applied brass boat-shaped fore-sight to the twin-banded nose-cap, no provision for rear-sight, 'P', 'V' and 'Eagle's Head' proofmarks at breech, solid top-tang with date and rounded tip, plain lockplate with brass pan and marked with a 'U.S.' eagle device below and dated to tail, walnut full-stock, iron furniture including distinctive reinforcement swelling for swivel mount on trigger guard and iron under-barrel ramrod
