A SCARCE 12-BORE 1875 PATENT PUSH-FORWARD UNDERLEVER SELF-COCKING HAMMERGUN, serial no. 15232,
circa 1877, 30in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, the rib engraved 'TIPPING & LAWDEN. WOODSTOCK ST. OXFORD ST. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, heavily pitted and some dents, action incorporating Edwin Hughes 'hand lever' self-half and full cocking action, patent no. 1290 of 9th April 1875, carved percussion fences, large strikers, the action flats marked 'J.P. Patent B' in a diamond, border and acanthus scroll engraving, the underside with 'THE WEBLEY-LANG PATENT SELF COCKER', 14 3/8in. figured stock (slightly cast on, minor setting cracks to rear of sideplates) including steel buttplate, fore-end with grip-catch release lever, weight 7lb. 5oz.

Other Notes: The Hughes 1875 patent self-cocking hammer action would be re-registered for hammerless guns by J. Lang as patent no. 1422 of 7th April 1880. Edwin Hughes, an employee of Lang's had become workshop manager for the company in 1868, a position he would hold until at least 1886.
Webley's bought the firm of Tipping and Lawden in 1877 and used the name to sell plainer quality guns, their London showroom was at 17 Woodstock Street between 1871 and 1877.
P. Webley's 1877 catalogue (marked as 'with which is incorporated the business of Tipping & Lawden of Constitution Hill') illustrates the 'Lang's Patent Safety Self-Cocking Gun'
