A RARE ORIGINAL 1765 COPY OF ANGELO DOMENICO MALEVOLTI'S (ANGELO'S) 'THE SCHOOL OF FENCING' or 'L'ECOLE DES ARMES',
desirable second edition in both English and French language, the large landscape format book lavishly illustrated with 47 full page engravings of various fighting techniques with rapiers, quarter bound, measuring approx. 18 1/2in. x 11 1/2in., (some wear to covers, title page creased)

Provenance: The publication, subtitled 'With a General Explanation of the Principal Attitudes and Positions Peculiar to the Art' and dedicated to their Royal Highnesses The Duke of Gloucester and Prince Henry-Frederic was published in London by S. Hooper in 1765. The previous edition was in French language only and published in 1763 (the illustrations bear this date). Angelo Domenico Malevolti (1716-1802) was the son of a wealthy Italian merchant and on his arrival in England, changed his name to simply 'Angelo' He became a fencing teacher to the English Royal Family, practising the fencing techniques and positions according to the French fencing schools of the time
